News this week

Welcome to all our new families in EYFS; the reception and nursery children have been making their new friends very welcome. They have been particularly keen to show and share with them the progress made by the EYFS green beans and pumpkins that they planted in the summer term.

All over school, children have been harvesting the crops that they planted before the summer holidays.

Toby, Henry, and Charlie from Y2, reporting on their success with sunflowers.

“We planted sunflower seeds in May when we were in Year 1. They needed water so we watered them every day with a watering can. They needed sun and air and someone to look after them. They were all definitely taller than we were.”

“They help the environment.”

“Bees might visit sunflowers to look for pollen.”

Year 5 have been watching what has happened to their tomato plants: Amy and Fleur went to look in the polytunnel.

We planted our tomatoes in the spring of Year 4. We had an early crop before the end of term. We hadn’t looked at them again since the start of the summer holidays. Now the Tigerella ones are the size of small pumpkins! We have really small ones which are cherry tomatoes and a variety that looks like the ones we can buy in the supermarket.

We were really surprised at the size of the Tigerella ones. We are glad that we have a polytunnel so that they could grow so well, but you do need to stand them in trays of water so that they don’t dry out. When we first planted them we didn’t imagine that such little seeds would grow into huge tomatoes.

Year 4 planted carrots and melons and Sophie, Myree and Elizabeth have an update

When we went to check our melons, we found that there were six. Most of the melons were small but one was the size of two fists.

Carrots come in different shapes and sizes. They smell really strong. The bigger the clump of leaves, the bigger the carrot.

Year 6 picked the apples that were ripe in the tree in the Secret Garden beside their new classroom.

They were big, green, quite sour and juicy; it was an organic sour taste. They were quite large: a regular apple size and there were five of them. We gave some to the current Year 4s because they had watered the tree last term, reported Rupert.
