Intent

Intent

Our EYFS curriculum is ambitious, coherently planned and sequenced to ensure all children, regardless of starting points, develop the knowledge and skills needed for future learning. It is rooted in the statutory EYFS framework and underpinned by our core values of integrity, compassion, resilience and courage.

We prioritise communication and language as the foundation for learning and ensure a strong focus on early literacy and mathematics. In Nursery, children develop early phonological awareness (rhyme, oral blending, sound discrimination), listening skills and early number understanding through counting and number recognition. In Reception, this knowledge is built upon systematically to support children in achieving the Early Learning Goals and readiness for Year 1.

Our curriculum is designed to build cultural capital, broaden experiences and promote independence, curiosity and resilience.

Implementation

Our curriculum is implemented through a well-balanced approach of adult-led, adult-initiated and child-led learning, enabling children to practise, apply and embed new knowledge.

Staff use high-quality interactions and precise modelling to extend language, deepen understanding and address misconceptions. Early reading is prioritised through the consistent teaching of phonics using Essential Letters and Sounds, ensuring a systematic approach to developing decoding skills.

Nursery children access daily phonological awareness sessions to secure the foundations for early reading. Continuous provision is carefully designed and responsive, allowing children to revisit and apply learning independently.

Ongoing assessment is used effectively to check understanding, inform next steps and ensure that the curriculum is implemented consistently and meets the needs of all learners.

Impact

Children make strong progress from their starting points, developing secure knowledge and skills across all areas of learning. They demonstrate confidence in communication, early reading, writing and mathematics.

Children show high levels of engagement, independence and resilience, reflecting our school values in their attitudes to learning. By the end of Reception, the majority of children achieve a Good Level of Development and are well prepared for the next stage of education.

Children leave EYFS as confident, capable learners, equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continued success.
